In the past month, I’ve become quite intrigued with the blood marrow registries in North America. Specifically, there is a severe lack of Chinese donors and mixed donors.

A cool guy I know named Jeff Chiba Stearns, who created such films as “What are you anyways?” and “One Hapa Family” is part of a team working on a documentary called “Mixed Match”, about why it’s more difficult for mixed people to find bone marrow to treat rare blood diseases like leukemia.

According to the 2010 US Census, the number of people who associate with having more than one ethnic background has increased by almost 50% since 2000. Despite this growth of the multiracial population, many people do not realize the risks that lie ahead for mixed people with blood diseases, and the hardship that comes with a search for a donor match.

In Canada, there are only 1,694 searchable registrants identifying as multiethnic out of the over 277,000 that are currently on Canada’s stem cell Network according to OneMatch. We need to increase this number to help save lives.

There are a couple of things you can do to help.

1. Go to Canadian Blood Services and figure out how you can donate your stem cells etc. Just call 1-888-2-Donate and they’ll help you out.

2. Donate to the Mixed Match team to help them raise funds needed to create the film about this important issue. You can donate at- This site here .
